  Soil contamination   or   soil pollution   as part of   land degradation   is caused by the presence of   xenobiotics   (human-made) chemicals or other alteration in the natural soil environment. It is typically caused by industrial activity, agricultural chemicals or improper disposal of   waste . The most common chemicals involved are   petroleum   hydrocarbons ,   polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons   (such as naphthalene and   benzo(a)pyrene ),   solvents , pesticides,   lead , and other   heavy metals . Contamination is correlated with the degree of   industrialization   and intensity of chemical substance.   Air pollution  is the presence of substances in the  atmosphere  that are harmful to the  health  of  humans  and other  living beings , or cause damage to the  climate  or to materials. There are different types of air pollutants, such as gases (such as  ammonia ,  carbon monoxide ,  sulfur dioxide ,  nitrous oxides ,  methane  and  chlorofluorocarbons ),  particulates  (both organic and inorganic), and  biological molecules . Air pollution may cause diseases, allergies and even death to humans; it may also cause harm to other living organisms such as animals and food crops, and may damage the  natural  or  built environment . Electronic waste in India

 Electronic waste is emerging as a serious public health and environmental issue in India. India is the "fifth largest electronic waste producer in the world"; approximately 2 million tons of e-waste are generated annually and an undisclosed amount of e-waste is imported from other countries around the world. India generated 708,445 tonne e-waste in 2017-18 and 771,215 tonne the following fiscal, the report estimated. In 2019-20, the figure rose 32 per cent to 1,014,961 tonne. The figures have taken into account the 21 types of electrical and electronic equipments listed in the E-Waste Management Rules, 2016. Annually, computer devices account for nearly 70% of e-waste, 12% comes from the telecom sector, 8% from medical equipment and 7% from electric equipment.  The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that more than 40 per cent of food produced is wasted in India, and its costs could be as high as US$14 billion (12.42 billion euro) every year. -How much food is wasted in India per year? Indian households accounted for 7.4% of the entire 931 million tonnes of food wasted in the world in 2019. Globally, a household on average wasted 74 kg food each year.
